In her recent body of work, Deborah explores the emotion associated with time and place. Rather than documenting specific locations, which could be accomplished with a camera, she explores the feeling a place evokes and communicates that emotion through the canvas. In this way, her work acts as a metaphor for an inner mental landscape subconsciously recognizable to the viewer.
Deborah also explores themes of control and loss of control, through an additive and reductive process. Without a preconceived idea of where a painting is going, Deborah applies layer upon layer, until ultimately a harmonious resolution unfolds.
Originally from Portland, Oregon, Deborah now splits her time between Portland and Tucson, Arizona, where she is an artist at the Steinfeld Warehouse Gallery and Studios.
